How to Compress a PDF Without Making It Unreadable

Choose lossless, balanced, or strong PDF compression based on document content and verify text and image quality before sharing.

PDF compression is a tradeoff rather than a guaranteed target-size button. A text-only document and a photographed scan have very different opportunities for reduction.

PDFit.tools returns the original when a compression attempt would make the file larger, but the downloaded result still needs a visual check.

Understand what occupies the space

Searchable text is often already compact. High-resolution photographs, scanned pages, duplicate images, and embedded resources usually account for more of a PDF’s size.

Choose a profile

  • Lossless prioritizes preservation and may produce only a small reduction.
  • Balanced is the recommended first choice for most mixed documents.
  • Strong reduces large raster images more aggressively and requires careful inspection.

Why an exact 1 MB result cannot be promised

A size target depends on page count, image dimensions, color complexity, existing compression, fonts, and embedded objects. Two ten-page PDFs may compress very differently.

If a portal has a strict limit, remove unnecessary pages first, then try Balanced, and use Strong only after checking readability.

Verify the download

  • Zoom into small print and fine lines.
  • Confirm that searchable text can still be selected.
  • Inspect photographs, stamps, signatures, and diagrams.
  • Compare the reported input and output size.
  • Keep the source until the compressed copy has been accepted.

Review checklist

  1. Remove pages that are not required.
  2. Try Balanced first.
  3. Inspect small text at high zoom.
  4. Use Strong only when the size requirement justifies the quality tradeoff.
  5. Never delete the original before acceptance.
